I think you've found out what a lot of us have: the few leaders are overwhelmed by others who want a piece of the action for their self-image concerns, but aren't able to help in any meaningful way. Therefore they contribute static, lies, and drama as they manipulate to achieve their positions.

I think you're doing the right thing.
